Coronavirus Infection and Long COVID-19: What Is It?
While acute COVID-19 symptoms, such as loss of smell or shortness of breath, may recover quickly in some individuals, there are increasing reports from healthcare providers and patients that many symptoms persist long after the initial infection. This is often referred to as “Long COVID,” and limited channels exist for sufferers of this condition.
The World Health Organization states that “People with post COVID-19 condition, also known as ‘long COVID’, may have difficulty functioning in everyday life. Their condition may affect their ability to perform daily activities such as work or household chores.”
This condition is represented in both the unvaccinated population as well as those who received the COVID-19 vaccine; it is a long-term outcome of the sars-cov-2 pandemic that is still under research as new information and data comes to light.
Risk factors are not well documented, but do include ICU admitted COVID-19 survivors, as well as those with pre-existing health issues.
This service is a novel health care approach to help support patients with the long term effects of COVID-19.
Our physiotherapists work closely with COVID-19 “long haulers” who are no longer active COVID-19 patients, but experience difficulties with daily activities or exacerbation of pre-existing health conditions after the acute infection and recovery phase.
We support a return of quality of life and for our patients, with the goal of returning to a pre-condition state of wellness.
We are also able to offer this service via tele-rehabilitation if you are not comfortable or able to attend for in person care in our Edmonton clinics.
POST-COVID REHABILITATION PATIENT'S VOICE
A. L. (FEB. 2021)
I can’t express how grateful I am to the amazing team at REP Physio. After being diagnosed with COVID 19, I developed Chronic Fatigue Syndrome from the virus. My fatigue was so debilitating that I spent six months sleeping most of the day, not able to participate in normal activities of daily life. When I started my rehab at REP Physio I was extremely deconditioned. It was very difficult for me to come to terms with how poor my cardiovascular fitness was after being healthy and fit my whole life. Miles normalized where I was starting from and took the time to talk to me about what I was able to do and listened to how I was feeling. This approach makes me feel like part of the team and empowered to make health decisions. Throughout my rehab Miles has always checked in to ensure the plan is working for me, adjust the appointment based on how I’m feeling and push me when I need it. The care and encouragement from Miles had been essential to my progress.
My road to recovery hasn’t been easy, but the support I have received from the whole team is incredible. Now that I’m three months into rehab my fatigue symptoms have significantly reduced. I feel strong, capable and more like myself than I have since I got sick. I couldn’t have achieved so much without Miles and the team at REP Physio. They are dedicated, hardworking and personable. I truly believe they are the reason I am getting my life back.
