Types of Tension Headaches

If you are suffering from tension headaches, we have good news...

You can get relief at REP Physio!

Tension headaches and stress headaches are a common complaint we see at our Edmonton physiotherapy practices here in Edmonton. Our goal is to first understand the type of headaches you are suffering from, and then identify the underlying cause (or causes).

What does it mean to have a tension headache?

Headaches can be caused by tension, cervicogenic, stress, hypertension, sinus, migraines, hormone, cluster, allergy, etc. Tension-type headaches (TTH) are based on a patient’s description of the headache and the location. Tension-type headaches usually have mild to moderate symptoms and are not accompanied by nausea or vomiting, sensitivity to light or sound, and/or neurological symptoms.1

Headache trigger points?

Patients with tension-type headaches have an increased number of myofascial trigger points in muscles of the head, neck and shoulders. The location of the tension-type headache can lead us to the muscles at fault and thus tell us how to reduce the tension and headache symptoms. Common tension-type headache locations and their corresponding muscle group are listed here.2
